SmartFare is ending

On 7th September we are withdrawing the ability to top up our SmartFare cash travelcard. But don’t worry, if you do still have cash on your SmartFare card you can use it on the bus until 31 December 2018.

Try our new improved payment methods instead.

We’ve been accepting contactless payments on our buses for a year now and this popular method continues to grow.  Have you tried it yet?

Our drivers do accept cash and of course even give change.  For those of you that like to do everything on your phone we have our new mobile ticketing app – Clickit2Ride – where your phone becomes your ticket.  It’s available for ios and android, just search for clickit2ride.


Any existing cash credit on your SmartFare must be used up by 31st December 2018.

What is SmartFare?

SmartFare is one of older ticketing types, where you could load credit of £5, £10, £15 or £20 on to a Swindon Bus Travel card’s and use that as cash on the bus. We now offer a number of easier ticketing options and payment methods.

Does this affect all bus tickets?

No, only those customers who use the SmartFare ticketing type will be affected. All other bus ticket types remain unchanged.

Why are you withdrawing SmartFare?

With the introduction of contactless, our mobile ticketing app, and the removal of the old exact fare policy, this method of payment has become less popular.  We are moving on to a different smartcard provider where there will be many other improved benefits, but storing cash on a card isn’t one of them.

Will this affect me if I have money on my current SmartCard?

Not initially, as you have until 31 December 2018 to use it.  However, you will no longer be able to top up your card with a new cash value.

Will you be replacing the SmartFare?

No, we won’t be replacing the ticketing option as SmartFare is now, but we will be introducing a more user friendly travel card, and you will be able to purchase passes and tickets on the new card as you do now.

Do you still accept contactless, Apple Pay and Android Pay?

Yes, we still accept all of the above, we also now have a mobile ticketing app called Clickit2Ride and you can purchase passes and tickets via the app as well.
